Beijing Paralympics 2008 Team GB

On 24th August Sarah DLM and GB Table Tennis Team flew to Hong Kong for 8 days acclimatisation and training. During their stay they were presented to The British Ambassador of Hong Kong and other notable dignitaries & sponsors. On the 3rd of September the team arrived in The Paralympic Village in Beijing 4 days ahead of the Opening Ceremony. Unfortunately Sarah & her team were unable to attend as a number of players were competing the following morning!

The Table Tennis team consisted of 11 players all having worked hard to qualify over the last 4 years for the games.  The team consisted of 3 Standing and 8 Wheel Chair players. Disabilities ranged from spinal injuries, Cerebral Palsy, brittle bones, polio, & multiple arthritic conditions.

The competition Venue for Table Tennis was about 30 minutes away from the Paralympic Village depending on the traffic…!! The venue was a sell out everyday of the competition, table tennis being China’s national game.  Support from the chinese people was amazing even when China wasn’t playing. Unfortunately TeamGB had strong opposition from China and no medals were won.   However, 3 of our players were given an award for their commitment to Paralympic sport over the years, 2 out of the 3 having competed in 7 Paralympic games.

Overall though Paralympic Team GB won 42 GOLDS, 29 SILVERS, and 31 BRONZES and came second in the medals table. Congratulations to them all!

Following The Closing Ceremony Sarah DLM announced her retirement from Team GB to concentrate on The Clinic! This was a very difficult decision as just before the team travelled to Hong Kong one of the coaches’ and former player died.

Sarah had been with the squad for nearly 8 years.  She travelled the world with a group of athletes who showed courage & determination. It was an honour to be part of the team  and  will miss them all but maybe not the long long competition days!!!!!!!

Body Aware – Chris Butcher

Maintaining health and wellbeing or improving fitness can be a hard task for us all. Even if we are already fit and active, think how easy it is just to lose our balance and pull a muscle with the wrong move and the time it can take to recover from those minor injuries which result from exercising with poor technique or lifting something without being aware of the strain and damage that we may inadvertently cause our body. Even the fittest of professional athletes must devote significant time and energy to their fitness regimes to ensure they maximise their body’s effectiveness and ability, while minimising the risk of injury. This is true for all of us.

Chris Butcher has brought his wide-ranging skills and over 20 years’ experience as an exercise professional and gym instructor, together with his knowledge of Oriental arts, Swiss ball, massage techniques and back care to create Body Aware. Chris acts as a conduit or facilitator for you to increase your awareness and make valuable improvements to your health and fitness. His carefully tailored approach is gentle and supportive so is suitable for young and old alike and has proven to be highly effective for all kinds of requirements.

Perhaps you suffer with constant headaches or have a stressful desk job that keeps you awake at night so you greet the day with a stiff neck? Are you recovering from an operation or still suffering with a long-term painful condition that has meant you’ve had to avoid the challenges that any form of exercise presents? Maybe you’d like to improve a spinning roundhouse kick or your golf swing or simply wish to reinvigorate a training schedule with a fresh approach?

Whether you have acute or general aches and pains, long-term back problems that have persisted, despite conventional treatments or just a desire to enhance performance in your chosen sporting field, Body Aware can take you to another level.

What is Body Aware and how does it work?

Body Aware is a way of understanding your body’s orientation and improving your awareness of it in space, ‘proprioception’, as well as a method for gaining control of, and developing, your deep postural muscles or ‘core’ – the source of your body’s natural forces and strength. As a tailored approach, Body Aware is responsive to your needs so is a great way to start exercise or to improve any level of fitness ability. You will learn Swiss ball, floor and stretching techniques to enhance your body’s effectiveness which, longer term, allows you to continue with self correction while you reap a host of benefits.

What are the benefits of Body Aware?

After just 3 or 4 sessions it’s possible to feel the benefit of more natural movement which, by improving posture, balance and strength, reduces tension, headaches, pain and stiffness and increases flexibility and fitness. It can also help you to address any concerns you may have about returning to exercise after a long break allowing you to relax, feel happy and more confident. As your energy levels increase so does your positivity!

If you already enjoy a high level of fitness the fine adjustments that can be made will help you too. It improves connections between upper and lower body, increases your stretching ability and strength enabling greater power and endurance as well as benefiting the muscles for a speedier recovery after exercise.

What does it cost?

A 1 hour session is £25
A block booking of 4 sessions is £80

If you would like to book a session please contact us here at The Mews Clinic or to discuss anything in more detail please call Chris on 0788 6894922.

The Pilates Method

Pilates is a form of exercise devised by Joseph  Pilates( 1880 - 1968).

Pilates is for just about everyone, and from ages 8 to 80!! Pilates is a body - conditioning method that works in a different way to other fitness techniques. Targeting the deep postural muscles, it works by building strength from the inside out, rebalancing the body and bringing it into correct alignment. It helps to re-shape the body which will become longer, leaner and more toned. It will also improve your posture, achieving the perfect balance between strength and flexibility, and is a great way to relieve unwanted stress and tension. It is used across the board in sports be it amateur, or professional and on the other hand it is used for rehab after back, hip knee etc operations. It is also excellent for working with clients suffering with Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis and M.E. for example.

Pilates is a wonderful form of exercise for pregnancy, promoting good posture and healthy muscles to support the pregnancy. With pregnancy you can work right up to the birth safely.

If you are interested in booking into a class or wanting a 1-1 private session please contact the Clinic, and Sarah will guide you a Body Control Pilates teacher appropriate to your needs and location.

Body Control Pilates® and the Body Control Pilates®logo is a registered Trade Mark used under License.

“Welcome to Villa Caroline, a Luxury Villa in Beautiful Seefeld” !

Villa Caroline is a luxurious new Apartment House in Seefeld in the glorious Austrian Tirol. In June of this year, within a few weeks of opening, Villa Caroline received a visit from three Inspectors from Innsbruck and the Tourist Board who unanimously awarded the house “Four Edelweiss” – the highest accreditation for an Apartment House in the Austrian Tirol. The Senior Inspector then said:

“In my career as an Inspector I have visited around 1,400 Apartment Houses in the Tirol, and in my opinion, I would place Villa Caroline in the Top Ten of all those houses!”

Villa Caroline is just a five minute walk from the pretty town centre, its restaurants, shops and horse-drawn carriages. It comprises four large luxury apartments of between 110 and 125 sq.m each, with extensive balconies or terraces and their beautiful views to the surrounding mountains. Each Apartment has two bedrooms, two luxurious bathrooms with heated floors, a extensively equipped self-contained kitchen, and a very large, beautifully furnished lounge with large windows, wide-screen TV  and  Wi-Fi Internet access. Each can sleep four adults and up to three children.

EasyJet flies almost daily to Munich and Innsbruck from where you can easily reach Seefeld. Why pay a £1,000 per person for a package holiday when you can very simply plan your own for around £400 each, all-inclusive, but staying in a large luxury apartment instead of a small hotel room? We will tell you how!
